Mr. Macgregor
A small, pale, fidgety, clever man with a Cockney accent, Ellis is the local manager for a British company in Kyauktada, Burma. He loathes the Burmese—indeed, all non-white people—and constantly berates John Flory for being friends with Indian Dr. Veraswami. When Mr. Macgregor, at the insistence of his superiors, recommends that Kyauktada’s all-white European Club elect a token non-white member, Ellis protests loudly. After Maxwell is murdered by the relatives of a Burmese rebel he shot, Ellis strikes a Burmese high-schooler across the eyes with his cane on the pretext that the high-schooler was laughing at him. When the high-schooler goes blind after receiving poor medical care, the incident precipitates a riot, though Flory and the local police ultimately end the riot without bloodshed.
