Analysis
Nicole is shocked when Evan tells her the story about Nick and Kevin. Evan calms her, reassuring her that they have enough food, gas, and wood to last them through the winter. Nicole worries about the others on the reserve, and Evan agrees that they will have to help them. Nicole says it feels like the end of the world. Evan and Nicole hug tightly, taking comfort in each other’s arms. They undress and have sex, taking refuge in the warm safety of their bed.
Nicole and Evan are scared because the blackout is more widespread than they’d initially thought. But they’re immediately concerned for others in their community, again stressing their strong community-oriented values. Similarly, instead of panicking and turning on others, they turn toward each other and seek comfort in their bond. This grounds them and gives them the strength to support others.
