Colonel Aureliano Buendía fathers seventeen sons with seventeen different women while away fighting in the war. They all arrive in Macondo for the first time in a small span of time, and are baptized with the name Aureliano and the last names of their mothers. The Aurelianos receive ashes on their foreheads on Ash Wednesday that affix permanently to their faces. When Colonel Aureliano Buendía threatens to start his own army with his sons, it is this mark which identifies them for assassination.
