One Hundred Years of Solitude

by

Gabriel García Márquez

The twin of José Arcadio Segundo and son of Santa Sofia de la Piedad and Arcadio. Aureliano grows to be a fat hedonist, loving orgies and behaving recklessly. He marries Fernanda del Carpio, a woman from another town whom he admires in a carnival parade, but they are ill-suited, as she is far more mannered than he is. Aureliano Segundo carries on a lifelong affair with Petra Cotes, and the passion of their relationship is contagious to the livestock they raise together, making Aureliano Segundo a very wealthy man. Úrsula speculates that Aureliano Segundo and José Arcadio Segundo switched identities as children because they both so accurately match the temperament associated with the other’s name.
