Miss Larsen is the teacher at the rural schoolhouse Vivian/Niamh attends in Hemingford County, Minnesota. Miss Larsen’s parents have both passed away, and she lives with other unmarried women in a ladies’ boardinghouse in Hemingford, run by Mrs. Murphy. Miss Larsen is gentle, cheerful and intelligent. She is especially kind to Vivian/Niamh (called “Dorothy” at the time). After the Grotes kick “Dorothy” out, Miss Larsen takes care of her and arranges for her to stay with her at the home of Mrs. Murphy.
