Neil Gaiman

The eighty-first Lord of Stormhold is on his deathbed when the novel begins. He’s been ruling for centuries and thinks highly of himself—and he thinks less of his sons, whom he believes are soft and haven’t suffered as much as he has. To resolve the question of which son will succeed him, the Lord of Stormhold throws the Power of Stormhold—a topaz stone on a silver chain, which belongs to the rightful ruler of Stormhold—into the sky, where it knocks Yvaine from her place among the stars and causes her to fall to Earth. He dies immediately after.
