Analysis
Langdon drives the hijacked taxi out of the Bois de Boulogne before turning the wheel over to Sophie. They ignore the dispatcher urgently requesting their location over the radio. Sophie drives toward a tennis stadium near Rue Haxo. Langdon holds Saunière’s key and contemplates the unlikelihood of finding the Holy Grail, which is rumored to be hidden in England. The Priory moved the documents several times to keep them safe, though it is widely believed Da Vinci—as Grand Master—knew its most recent resting place. Because of this, Grail sleuths frequently comb Da Vinci’s works for clues pointing to the documents’ location. From his studies of art-related internet forums, Langdon knows that “Everyone loves a conspiracy.”
The intensifying police pursuit adds tension to the plot. Even with all the evidence of Saunière’s involvement with the Priory, Langdon has difficulty believing they are chasing something as legendary as the Holy Grail. Constantly moving the Grail as a protection tactic illustrates the Priory’s paranoia that the Church is always searching for their treasure. The notion that Da Vinci may have hidden clues pointing to the Grail’s location in his art is ample conspiracy fodder, attracting people (like Langdon) who are intrigued by the possibility of hidden meanings and symbolism.

Sophie asks if Langdon thinks the key unlocks the Holy Grail’s hiding place. He doubts this is a possibility, based on the Priory’s extreme levels of secrecy. Only four members know the Grail’s location at any given time: the Grand Master and three sénéchaux. Langdon thinks it’s unlikely Saunière attained such elite status, but Sophie privately thinks of the ritual she witnessed at the Normandy château and knows her grandfather was of a high status. Shame keeps her from telling Langdon what she saw. Finally, they turn onto Rue Haxo and locate the address: the Depository Bank of Zurich, which features an equal-armed cross. Langdon realizes the key fits a Swiss bank deposit box.
