Langdon, Sophie, and Teabing arrive at the Temple Church in London. Unlike other churches, it is circular. The building isn’t open to sightseers for a few hours, but Teabing has a plan. He knocks loudly, summoning an altar boy who is vacuuming. Teabing pretends Langdon and Sophie are descendants of the church’s benefactor who have come to scatter his ashes in the sanctuary, as they do every year. Not wanting to get in trouble with the priest, the boy lets them in. Left alone in the sanctuary, they see 10 stone knights lying on the floor, each with different armor. Langdon feels certain they’re in the right place.
The church’s circular construction (as opposed to the typical cross shape of other cathedrals) hints at its pagan origins. Once again, Teabing proves himself a talented manipulator and gains them entry to the sanctuary. The knights’ presence makes the Priory legend feel closer than ever.
