Changez is Saladin’s father and a prominent member of India’s nationalist movement. The public loves Changez, but Saladin has a difficult relationship with his father, who he feels withholds affection. From a young age, Changez makes Saladin be self-reliant, which strains their relationship. When Saladin does not live his life the way Changez wants him to, Changez grows increasingly hostile. For much of his life, Saladin does not talk to his father, though they do make up just before Changez dies.
