The Decameron

The Decameron

by

Giovanni Boccaccio

The King of Cypress appears in Elissa’s first tale (I, 9) as an extremely cowardly and ineffective ruler. The character is based on the historical figure Guy de Lusignan, a notoriously weak king crowned during the Third Crusade. His transformation at the words of the Gascon Gentlewoman demonstrates nobility of character, however belated.
