In the following excerpt from Book 1, Part 3, the Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohaim proposes a strange set of theoretical circumstances as an allegory for Paul's mind. 

The willow submits to the wind and prospers until one day it is many willows—a wall against the wind. That is the willow's purpose.
