Violet’s Father Character Analysis

Violet’s father is a member of the Readjuster Party, which aimed to increase voting rights for Black citizens across Virginia. He is frequently absent from Violet’s childhood home, returning home only once a decade (often with lavish presents in tow). During one of Violet’s father’s long absences, his wife Rose Dear dies by suicide—a tragedy that is underscored when Violet’s father comes back just 10 days later with an embroidered pillow for her. The narrator suspects that Violet’s father’s political involvement led to his family’s belongings being repossessed.

The place of shade without trees where you know you are not and never again will be loved by anybody who can choose to do it? Where everything is over about the talking?
