Joseph Brook Character Analysis

Joseph Brook is a 14-year-old boy in Maine’s foster care system. Though reserved and gruff, he also is soft-hearted and intelligent. Prior to his foster placement with the Hurds, Joseph lived with his abusive father, Mr. Brook. At age 13, Joseph fell in love with 13-year-old Madeleine Joyce, the neglected daughter of rich lawyers. When Madeleine’s parents found out that Joseph and Madeleine had had sex, they took out an injunction against Joseph. Later, after discovering that Joseph had impregnated Madeline, the state investigated Joseph’s father and removed Joseph from the household. After Madeleine died giving birth to baby Jupiter, Joseph swallowed unidentified pills and attacked a teacher. He was sent to a high-security juvenile facility, where other boys beat him and may have sexually assaulted him. Due to these traumatic experiences, Joseph does not like to be touched or to let other people stand behind him. After Joseph’s social worker Mrs. Stroud places him in a foster home with the Hurd family, Joseph slowly learns to trust Mr. Hurd, Mrs. Hurd, and Jack Hurd. The safe, loving environment they provide for Joseph helps him overcome his hatred of physical touch and express to them his desire to parent his baby daughter, Jupiter. Though the Hurds believe that Joseph is too young to take care of Jupiter by himself, they ultimately decide to adopt Jupiter so that Joseph and Jupiter can live in the same household. Tragically, before the adoption can occur, Joseph’s abusive father kidnaps him from the Hurd house at gunpoint and drives him over a derelict bridge, which collapses, killing them both.

He won’t let anyone stand behind him.

He won’t let anyone touch him.

The winter I was six, I saw a yellow dog on thin ice on the Alliance. I was with my mother, and we were walking back from a breakfast potluck at First Congregational before it became old First Congregational. The yellow dog was out farther on the ice than Joseph, but not much, and it had fallen through and its eyes were huge and it was grabbing on with its front paws, scratching, looking for something to hold onto. It wasn’t making a sound. I told my mother we had to go get it, but she held my arm so I wouldn’t go down to the river.

Her father and her mother were both lawyers, so she spent a lot of time by herself in that big house when she wasn’t away at her prep school.
