One of Anne Frank’s two best friends, Lies was sent to Bergen-Belsen, the same concentration camp as Anne. At the camp, she tries to send food to Anne across a barbed wire fence, risking her own life in the process. However, unlike Anne, she is able to survive and tell her story. She impresses the Freedom Writers with her courage and devotion to her friend, demonstrating her willingness to commit to high principles of generosity and care even in the most harrowing circumstances.
