Ulysses

Ulysses

by

James Joyce

In South Africa, the British Empire went to war with two independent states of white settlers (Boers) from 1899 to 1902. Irishmen served in both sides of the war: thousands of Irish soldiers fought as part of the British Army, but many Irish nationalists also supported and fought with the Boers, whom they viewed as partners in the struggle against British imperialism.
