One of the formative events in Zachry’s life is watching as warriors from the rival Kona tribe kill his Pa. Zachry’s failure to do anything during his father’s murder leads Zachry to think of himself as a coward, and Zachry wrestles with the concepts of bravery and cowardice over the course of the rest of the story. Pa’s death and absence help Zachry form his view about the world, making Zachry skeptical of outsiders and teaching him about the power and consequences of violence.
