Confessions

by

Saint Augustine

God the Holy Spirit is the third divine person of the Holy Trinity, coeternal with God the Father and God the Son (Jesus Christ). Augustine doesn’t write as much about the Spirit in Confessions, but where Genesis mentions the spirit of God hovering over the waters at creation, Augustine believes the author refers to the Holy Spirit. He also draws attention to the Holy Spirit’s work of inspiration in human hearts and his dispersal of gifts that enable people to serve God.
