Van Go Jenkins Character Analysis

Van Go Jenkins—who typically goes by Go—is a young Black man who lives in poverty in Los Angeles. He is the protagonist of My Pafology, the novella Monk writes under the pseudonym Stagg R. Leigh as a satire of so-called “Black” fiction, and Go’s character is an exaggerated stereotype of the underprivileged Black characters typical of this genre. Though only 19 years old, he has already fathered four children by four different women. He is poor, has no work ethic, is angry at the world, and exists in an aimless cycle of drugs, guns, sex, and violence. Although Monk writes My Pafology to criticize elements of “Black” literature he deems lazy and offensive, ultimately Go’s character speaks to some of the conflicts that plague Monk in his real life, like his oscillating love and resentment toward his parents and his struggle to find acceptance in society.
