My Sister’s Keeper: 48. Thursday: Jesse Summary & Analysis

Summary
Analysis
Jesse walks outside into the rain. He heads towards the elementary school and begins to run fast until he reaches the high school soccer field. There, he flops down onto the grass and watches the storm. He thinks of a time he came here to take acid; then, he stared up at the sky and hoped for lightning to come down and strike him, but it didn’t. It doesn’t strike him now, either so he gets up and decides to move forward.
Jesse’s brief hope of lightning striking him reflects his self-destructive impulses that he developed as a result of feeling useless. However, the fact that he gets up once the lightning doesn’t strike signifies how he’s beginning to find meaning in his life once again.
