My Sister’s Keeper

My Sister’s Keeper

by

Jodi Picoult

Judge DeSalvo is the judge presiding over Anna’s case. A few years before the events of the novel, Judge DeSalvo’s 12-year-old daughter was killed by a drunk driver. This tragedy initially makes Campbell worried that Judge DeSalvo will not be able to be impartial during Anna’s case, as he speculates that the prospect of Kate’s death will remind him of his own loss. However, Judge DeSalvo consistently works to keep things impartial, assigning Anna a guardian ad litem when he sees her struggling with her decisions. He also discourages Sara from talking to Anna about the case. In the end, he rules in Anna’s favor, granting her medical emancipation from her parents.
