Michel is Leah’s husband. He is a Black man from France who immigrated to Britain. Like Natalie, Michel is also eager to improve his social standing, but he doesn’t understand upper-class society as well, which sometimes embarrasses Leah. Perhaps as a result of his aspirations to improve, Michel also sometimes looks down on people he sees as beneath him, like Shar, whom Michel believes doesn’t deserve charity. One of the biggest challenges in Michel and Leah’s marriage is that he really wants a child, but she is secretly doing everything she can to not get pregnant. Together, Michel and Leah represent how modern relationships can be challenging and how dishonesty or lack of trust can make them even more difficult.
