The narrator of “Mericans.” Micaela is a tolerant young girl who puts up with her brothers, Junior and Keeks, as they horseplay outside the church where they’re all waiting for their grandmother, whom Micaela refers to as “the awful grandmother.” While playing, Micaela’s brothers tell her to pretend to be undesirable characters, and she doesn’t object because she doesn’t want them to exclude her entirely on the grounds that she is a “girl,” which she says has become their “favorite insult.” Finally tiring of her brothers, Micaela goes into the church and kneels beside her grandmother, but she can’t sit still.
