American Pastoral

by

Philip Roth

Billy is a waiter at Vincent’s, an Italian restaurant in New York famous for its baked ziti. The Swede regularly takes Dawn and Merry to eat there, and Billy develops an instant fondness for Merry because she reminds him of his kid brother, who also stutters. The Swede continues to eat at Vincent’s even after his life falls apart in the aftermath of Merry’s crime, going there with his second wife and the children they have together.
