Filcher is the first groom Mr. Barry hires to care for Black Beauty. He’s a knowledgeable horseperson, as he used to work as an ostler (a person who cares for horses at inns). But he and his young son steal Black Beauty’s corn and oats, and he eventually goes to jail for the crime.
