Finrod Felagund Character Analysis

Finrod, the eldest son of Finarfin, is a Noldor elf and the king of Nargothrond. Though Finrod follows Fëanor to Middle-earth and is caught in the Doom of the Noldor, he and his people don’t participate in the Kinslaying of the Teleri. Wise, generous, and fair, Finrod is the first elf to meet and educate a group of men who enter Beleriand. During the fourth battle of the Wars of Beleriand, a man named Barahir saves Finrod’s life, and Finrod swears an oath of friendship with him, though his foresight tells him that the oath will lead to his death. Barahir’s son Beren calls in the favor and asks for Finrod’s aid in stealing a Silmaril from Melkor. Finrod accompanies Beren on his quest and saves his life by fighting off a werewolf when they’re captured by Sauron. Finrod dies of his wounds, faithfully redeeming his oath to Barahir.

Thus he was beguiled by his own malice, for he watched her, leaving her free for a while, and taking secret pleasure in his thought. Then suddenly she eluded his sight, and out of the shadows began a song of such surpassing loveliness, and of such blinding power, that he listened perforce; and a blindness came upon him, as his eyes roamed to and fro, seeking her.
